The Role of Governors

Our Governors play a vital role in the life of the school. They provide strategic oversight, helping to shape the school's vision, values and long-term direction. Working alongside school leaders, Governors offer support and challenge, ensuring that decisions are made in the best interests of our pupils and that the school continues to provide the highest quality education.

A key responsibility of the Governing Board is to hold school leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and the effective use of resources. Through regular meetings, visits and engagement with the school community, Governors develop a strong understanding of school life and the experiences of our pupils and staff.

To strengthen this understanding, each Governor is linked to a specific pupil and meets with them regularly during school visits. These visits provide valuable insight into the day-to-day experiences of children in our school and help Governors understand the real impact of their decisions. By hearing directly from pupils and seeing school life first-hand, Governors are better equipped to support the school's ongoing development and ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Public Access to Governance Information

The school will make the following documents available for public inspection on request:

• the agenda for every meeting of the full governing body and it’s committees
• the approved minutes of each meeting
• any report, document or other paper considered at each meeting.

The school may exclude from these documents any material relating to:

• a named teacher or other employee or proposed employee
• a named pupil or student at the school, or candidate for admission or referral to it
• any matter which, by reason of its nature, the governors are satisfied should remain confidential.

Collecting & Publishing Governing Board Diversity Data 

The governors of Shorefields School believe it is important that boards reflect the diversity of the school communities they serve.  Diverse boards promote inclusive school environments and provide diverse role models for staff and young people.

The governors are currently collecting data on the diversity of the board, including data on age, gender and ethnicity.  They will use that data to inform their recruitment and training needs and ensure there is always a diverse range of perspectives around the table to support robust decision making.

Due to our relatively small governing board, we will not publish this diversity data online as individual governors could be identified and we have a legal obligation to protect their personal data.
